Apple today unveiled a more approachable and creative app for editing videos – Clips. The new application borrows best of all the popular platforms such as Prisma, Instagram, iMovie, Instagram in a single location. The concept of Clips is quite straightforward – you stitch together multiple photos and videos, add annotations, add filters, and share. Clips, in fact, was briefly rumored back last summer, however, we’re not sure what took them so long.
The Clips app has a minimal interface like most Apple products with the landing screen being a square viewfinder. Pressing and holding the big red bar on the bottom can be used to record or you can, of course, import the existing ones. There are four primary customizing options – Live Titles, Filters, Overlays, and Posters.
Live Titles are basically animated captions which let you select a style and then based on the voice you record, translate it (compatible with 36 languages) and fuse into the video with perfectly synced with the voice. It’s a neat and unique approach as you don’t necessary have to type in the text overlay. Furthermore, the app includes effects such as comic book filters, speech bubbles, shapes, emojis, and full-screen animated posters. There is also a wide range of soundtracks built in, which automatically adjust to match the length of a video.
Clips also has a few machine learning algorithms to automatically adjust these tunings and even suggest who to share with based on the people who appear in the video, and the people a user shares with most often. When you tap on a suggested name, Clips inserts the video right into Messages which is definitely, an intuitive addition.
“Clips gives iPhone and iPad users a new way to express themselves through video, and it’s incredibly easy to use,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Apps Product Marketing. “The effects, filters and amazing new Live Titles we’ve designed for Clips let anyone make great-looking, easily sharable videos with just a few taps.”
Once done, Clips allows sharing directly to social networks and video websites, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and more. As far as availability is concerned, Clips will be available on the App Store for free beginning in April and is compatible with devices running iOS 10.3 including iPhone 5s and later, the new 9.7-inch iPad, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod Touch 6th generation.
