This is just in – at the Geneva International Motor Show, Apple has finally unveiled what was previously rumored as “iOS in the car”. Premiering with leading auto manufacturers like BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover and many others, Apple has unveiled CarPlay, ‘the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone in the car. The new Apple CarPlay product will be available as an update to iOS 7 and will work with Lightning-enabled iPhone 5s, 5c and iPhone 5.
Apple’s CarPlay will be available in select cars shipping in 2014 from the following auto companies: Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp. Speaking about the announcement of this widely awaited product, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing said the following:
CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car. iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimised distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.
You will be able to easily control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just by using the push-and-hold voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri. Thus, you will be able to perform a wide area of functions such as making hands-free calls, using Maps, listening to music or access written and audio messages. By using Siri, drivers will be able to dictate responses or make calls, without getting distracted from driving.
The Maps application will anticipate destinations based on recent trips via contacts, emails or texts, and will then provide routing instructions, traffic conditions and estimated time of arrival. But many will use CarPlay for its media purposes, as it will easily make accessible all of your podcasts and audiobooks. You will also be able to use third-party audio apps like Spotify and iHeartRadio.
